Blog 9: Why Media Literacy Matters in your PLN

In the age of information overload, we are surrounded by all kinds of information daily. Some of this information will inevitably be negative and erroneous to mislead us. However, media literacy can help us recognize and avoid spreading false information within PLNs, thus contributing to the overall credibility of the network.

People often seek information that is consistent with their pre-existing beliefs and values. When others generate ideas that are different from their own they oppose the other person’s ideas and refute them. Media literacy encourages individuals to recognize and overcome confirmation bias, but without these skills, conflict may arise when individuals with different biases encounter the same set of facts. Media literacy can help individuals understand the nuances of an issue, and people may gravitate towards extreme positions. This polarization can lead to conflict, as individuals with opposing views may find it difficult to find common ground.

So media literate PLNs enable individuals to make informed decisions based on accurate and reliable information, thereby reducing the likelihood of conflict due to misunderstanding or misinformation. Individuals can discuss different perspectives, share different opinions, and engage in meaningful conversations based on critical thinking. Through continuous learning and sharing in PLN, we can better adapt to the needs of the information society, improve our ability to process and create information, and open up broader possibilities for our learning, work, and life!
